As an adult learner, you probably have responsibilities, special needs and concerns which are different from traditional students going to college right after high school. Adapting to the academic environment will bring some unique challenges to you that traditional students don’t usually encounter. These include your other priorities—namely your career, family and other activities and responsibilities that may conflict with your studies. To help you determine if college is right for you at this time, ask yourself the following questions:
- Can I cope with issues in today’s classroom environment?
- Is it economically feasible for me to begin or return to college at this time?
- Should I attend college on a full-time or part-time basis?
- Will attending college require me to leave my steady, full-time job?
- Will I need to take a part-time job to help with my finances?
- How will I benefit from a college education in the long run?
- Do I have the support of those closest to me?
Speak with your admissions counselor or adult services advisor about any questions you may have. Going back to school can be a challenge. Your advisor can help ease your transition.
