Apply to College
Once your student has narrowed the list of colleges down to those of most interest, it’s time to start the application process. It’s wise for your student to apply to several colleges. Keep in mind, applications take time, usually aren’t free, and admissions due dates vary from college to college. Generally, your student should apply one year before attending or transferring to another college.

When determining how much time your student will need to apply for college, consider the due dates for each requested document. Most schools require your student to send transcripts (from high schools and colleges previously attended) and letter(s) of recommendation. Remind your student to allow sufficient time for writing essays and doing any other paperwork that may be necessary. In order to complete the entire process by the September before starting college, your student should have lists of potential colleges at least one and a half years before college starts.

Applying to colleges may seem overwhelming to your student. But with your help and guidance toward taking the right steps and by starting early, your student will be able to meet the challenge. Use the Parent’s Application Timeline to keep on track. And have your student use the Student’s Application Timeline.
