A February 25, 2007 article from The Associated Press reports that, across the country, school days are being re-examined to determine how many hours students should be in class. Currently, U.S. students attend classes for an average of 6.5 hours per day, 180 days per year - which is less than many other industrialized nations. Much success has been seen in schools that have experimented with longer school days, occasional Saturday classes, and additional school work during the summer months. Students participating in the extended school days seem to perform best when they can choose from a variety of elective courses that maintain their interest and enthusiasm. Some legislators are considering proposals which might incorporate longer school days as a means of improving schools that do not meet all requirements for the No Child Left Behind law.
