Mentoring Used to Increase Retention Rates for New Teachers
2/8/2007

A February 7, 2007 article from The Associated Press reports that many states are developing mentoring programs to increase retention rates for new teachers. It is estimated that, nationally, up to half of new teachers will leave the profession within 5 years. When veteran teachers serve as mentors, new teachers are less likely to seek other employment. Increasing teacher retention rates saves taxpayer dollars, as well as creating a more stable environment for students. Research indicates that students perform better when their teachers have at least 5 years of experience.
