A December 2006 article from University Business discusses the challenges involved with trying to simplify the process of applying for college financial aid. While reducing the number of questions on the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) may seem like one logical way to make the process less complicated for families, some experts fear it may have the opposite effect. For example, if questions are removed from the FAFSA that certain colleges or related organizations require to determine aid eligibility, then families might end up being required to submit multiple applications. Also, significant changes on the FAFSA would necessitate altering the federal need analysis formula, which could be a lengthy process.
