A December 13, 2006 article from Gannett News Service and The Associated Press reports that, across the nation, school administrators struggle to find the best systems for communicating information to parents about school safety. While they understand the importance of alerting parents to potentially unsafe situations, administrators want to avoid causing unwarranted alarm. Parents, who may first hear of school incidents from their children, sometimes think that administrators wait too long to report information. The situation becomes increasingly frustrating for administrators and families when unfounded rumors start to spread among the student body, and inaccurate information is then shared with parents by their children. Experts recommend that school administrators develop specific notification policies, and make sure that all parents are aware of what those policies are.
