Business Schools Focus on Building Students' Communication Skills

According to a December 10, 2006 article from The Associated Press, business schools are attempting to address concerns within the business industry that the desire to be fast is resulting in poor communication habits. The increasingly popular technology of text messaging may allow individuals to send information quickly, but spelling and grammar rules are typically ignored. Consequently, proper spelling and grammar - along with the ability to compose clear, concise messages - is being reviewed with business students. Selecting the proper communication medium for a given situation is another topic being discussed in college classrooms - for example, while sending an e-mail message may be appropriate to provide a status update for an ongoing project, it is not the best way to inform employees that their positions have been eliminated due to down-sizing. The importance of double-checking and proof-reading messages is also being reinforced to students.
