According to a September 29, 2006 article from The Washington Post, a group of educators in Virginia has launched a campaign to make social studies a more prominent subject in U.S. school curriculums. The group believes that the current emphasis on reading and mathematics, prompted by requirements outlined in the No Child Left Behind law, has left little room for teaching social studies disciplines (such as history, government and geography). The group would like to see state social studies test scores factored into the federal ratings, along with reading and math results.
