According to an August 8, 2006 article from The Washington Post, several school systems in the Washington, D.C. area are starting to introduce elementary school students to foreign languages. Those who support teaching foreign language to children indicate that young minds are best able to learn new languages, and individuals who are bilingual as children seem better prepared to learn even more languages later in life. Also, those who are able to speak multiple languages may be more marketable in the global economy. The school systems are seeking to find the proper balance between teaching the basics and adding these new topics into the curriculum, without overwhelming their students or depleting their available resources.
