Goal of Proposed 'Teachers Trust' to Attract Quality Teachers
7/12/2006

According to a July 11, 2006 article from USA Today, The College Board's Center for Innovative Thought has announced a proposal to create a national "Teachers Trust." The main goal of the program would be to attract bright young professionals into the teaching field, as well as encourage veteran educators to remain in the classroom and serve as mentors for new teachers. Among the recommendations for the proposed program are significant salary increases, longer contracts, a multi-tiered "career ladder," and acceptance of both traditional and alternative teacher-preparation programs. Potential funding sources for the proposed program include federal, state and local government; private enterprise; matching public grants; and a special assessment of corporate windfall profits.

The article is available at the USA Today Web site.
