A July 3, 2006 article from the Chicago Sun-Times discusses how several schools in the Chicagoland area provide students with a summer reading list. In an effort to keep students engaged, schools often create their summer reading lists based on the curriculum for the upcoming school year. Often, this results in incorporating both traditional classics and contemporary works. Reading books on the summer list is mandatory at some schools, and voluntary at others.
