A June 17, 2006 article from The Associated Press reports an increase in the number of recent college graduates who are choosing to participate in Teach for America (TFA). A nonprofit organization, TFA assists participants with the alternative certification process and trains them to teach in disadvantaged schools. While critics believe the short teaching commitment (two years) is a weakness in the program, the organization contends that individuals who participate and then move on to other fields will have a unique perspective to help influence education policy for low-income areas.
