A June 9, 2006 article from The Associated Press reports that hundreds of colleges in the United States and Canada are finding ways to "self-sustain," using environmental efforts to save money while conserving energy. Among the efforts, either being considered or already underway, are converting used cafeteria oil into biodiesel fuel, operating wind turbines, and running campus farms. A friendly rivalry is developing between some colleges, each prompting the other to see who can visualize and implement the most innovative solutions.
