An April 27, 2006 article from The Associated Press reports that less than half of the nearly 2,400 fifth-grade students in Texas schools who had been displaced by Hurricanes Rita and Katrina passed the math portion of the Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills, which was administered in early April. More than 80% of students statewide passed the math section of the test. Officials believe the trauma of the hurricanes and being forced to leave their homes suddenly are among the top reasons displaced students did not perform well. The test, which must be passed in order to begin the sixth grade, can be taken up to three times.
