Drug Convictions Cost Financial Aid

According to an article on the USA Today Web site, one in every 400 students who apply for federal financial aid for college is rejected because of a drug conviction. Since the federal government added a question asking about drug convictions to the financial aid application in the 2000-01 school year, 189,065 students have lost out on financial aid, as reported in a study by Students for Sensible Drug Policy.

Although the law is currently being challenged by the American Civil Liberties Union, at this point, a student convicted of drug possession and/or of selling drugs, is ineligible for financial aid for a minimum of one year, with the time increasing depending on the number of offenses.
