Students Spend 'Alternative Spring Break' Volunteering on Gulf Coast
3/20/2006

A March 15, 2006 article from USA Today reports that thousands of high school and college students are spending their spring break assisting with hurricane recovery efforts on the Gulf Coast. Since the year 2000, there has been an 11% increase in the number of schools offering alternative spring break opportunities for students. In an effort to encourage students to continue volunteering on the Gulf Coast, the Campus Compact coalition hopes to organize a "Summer of Service" program. Campus Compact includes 1,000 colleges and universities focused on promoting higher education's civic mission.
