A January 23, 2006 article from The Washington Post reports that, due to the high cost of textbooks, some college students are choosing not to purchase all the materials listed on course syllabuses each term. According to a study from the Government Accountability Office (GAO), the cost of college textbooks has increased at twice the rate of inflation over the past 20 years. During the 2003-04 academic year, students at public four-year colleges spent an average of $900 on books and supplies - this figure represents more than 25% of their total cost for tuition and fees.
The article is available at the Web site of The Washington Post, and the GAO study can be accessed via the GAO Web site.
