A recent article from USA Today discusses the fact that U.S. schools are facing a nursing shortage. In many cases, a lack of adequate nursing staff is the result of limited budgets. Sometimes, one full-time nurse is on call for multiple schools and responsible for the medical needs of thousands of students. Although federal guidelines recommend one nurse for every 750 students, few school districts have the resources to make this a reality. According to 2004 Census data, schools across the nation average one teacher for every 950 students.
