Illinois Classrooms Losing Teaching Experience
10/25/2005

According to data released from the Illinois State Board of Education, teachers had an average of 13.6 years in Illinois classrooms in school year 2004-05. This compares to 15 years in 1986 and 16 years in 1993. The decline in the level of teaching experience is contributed to early retirement, budget constraints and federal reforms, and is seen as a mixed blessing by the president of the Illinois Education Association. While the mentoring relationship between younger and more experienced teachers is lost, turnover can also bring people with new ideas, enthusiasm and energy, says Ken Swanson.
