An October 18, 2005 article from The Associated Press discusses the Commission on the Future of Higher Education, established by U.S. Secretary of Education Margaret Spellings. The new commission, which recently had its first meeting, is charged with reviewing the nation's colleges in order to identify ways to make higher education more accessible and affordable, as well as developing increased college accountability to policy-makers and making colleges more competitive in the global arena.
A corresponding press release from the U.S. Department of Education (ED), dated October 17, 2005, provides Secretary Spellings' opening remarks at the first meeting of the commission. Also included is a link to the Commission on the Future of Higher Education Web site.
