An October 12, 2005 article from The Associated Press reports that New Orleans West, a Houston charter school opened for victims of Hurricane Katrina, provides an opportunity for displaced students and teachers to join together in the classroom. One of the school's goals is to provide a sense of comfort for students by matching them with teachers from their hometown. While many of the students may eventually return to New Orleans, attending New Orleans West provides them with a temporary connection to home.
