An October 11, 2005 article from the Chicago Sun-Times reports that 35 schools are launching "community school" programs beginning this week, reaching the Chicago Public Schools (CPS) goal with a total of 102 such schools. Community school programs, which are open late on weekdays and often on Saturdays, are available at no charge to parents, children and the community. Participating schools are required to partner with a community group, hire an individual to coordinate the program, and ensure that classes support the academic day. Research shows that, last year, more than half of the community schools saw improved test scores in reading.
