Government Temporarily Eases Requirements for Schools Impacted by Hurricane Katrina

A September 30, 2005 article from The Associated Press reports that a one-year delay of federal penalties will be provided for schools that can show required yearly progress has been impacted by Hurricane Katrina. The plan was announced by U.S. Secretary of Education Margaret Spellings, and is the first hurricane-related leeway that has been allowed with respect to the No Child Left Behind Act. The one-year delay of penalties is available to schools that sustained damage from the hurricane and schools that have taken in displaced students.
