Colleges Try to Contend with Hovering Parents

Called "helicopter parents" because they hover over their children's lives, parents at some colleges may find their involvement less than welcome at the start of this school year. In an effort to reverse what has become a trend of customer service to parents in favor of educating students, some colleges are beginning to take a different approach to parental involvement in the college setting.

Sending a somewhat different message than in past years, adminstrators are promoting healthy transitions for parents, including more limited contact with students and less parental interference in campus meetings. Although most colleges appreciate that parents care, they're now trying to strike the balance that will allow students to learn to solve problems on their own.
