The Most Unpopular Subject in School
8/18/2005

Math - love it or hate it? Apparently, a good number of students in the United States hate it. According to an AP-AOL News poll, nearly four in 10 adults hated math in school, which was twice as many as said that about any other subject. Although about a quarter of the population loves math, recent studies indicate that 15-year-old American students lag behind their peers in Europe and Asia in math, which may be attributable to the general dislike of the subject.

Experts in the education field promote a solid base in all core subjects, including math, English, social studies and science, so students can become "well-rounded citizens and skilled workers." Helping along efforts in this area is federal law requiring increased focus on reading and math.

More information about the poll can be found in the article on the CNN Web site.
