According to a July 19, 2005 article from The Associated Press, families sometimes face unique challenges when college students live with their parents. Government figures from 2004 show more than 33% of single undergraduate students in the United States live at home. While the economic advantages to commuting from home may be great, difficulties can arise when a student's expectations are different than those of the parent(s). In order to prevent misunderstandings and complications, experts recommend that family members communicate openly. Parents need to remember that the student is no longer a child, while young adults living at home must agree to adhere to all household rules.
