According to a July 5, 2005 article from The Associated Press, elementary and secondary school students are not gaining the knowledge and skills in computer science that may benefit them later in life. More than just basic literacy, computer science includes hardware and software design, applications in the real world, and an appreciation of how computers impact society. These topics are often only addressed in college-level computer science courses, which have seen a drop in enrollment in recent years. Some experts contend that states should develop computer science standards and required courses for elementary and secondary schools. Critics, however, argue that such requirements would place more pressure on student schedules that are already limited for time and resources.
