According to a June 17, 2005 article from the Chicago Sun-Times, a study conducted by the University of Chicago indicates that the number of failing grades a student receives in the 9th grade often indicates whether that student will graduate from high school. The more failing grades received during 9th grade, the less likely the student is to obtain a high school diploma. The study indicates that a student's performance in 9th grade, rather than 8th grade, is the best indicator of whether high school will be successfully completed.
