Spelling Bees Find Place in Popular Culture
5/27/2005

According to a May 26, 2005 article from Reuters, spelling bees are becoming more popular in American culture. The contests, in which school children compete with one another to determine who is the best speller, are showing up as the main topic in books, movies, and even musicals. Some speculate that the reason for the popularity of spelling bees is that, at some level, most adults can identify with the anxiety felt by students who are in the spotlight during the competitions. Recent books based on spelling bees touch upon the subject of parents who place a high amount of pressure on their children to perform well.
