A May 18, 2005 article from USA Today reports that the college graduating class of 2005 lists college debt and unemployment among their greatest fears for the future. Based on a recent online survey, conducted by bipartisan Partnership for Public Service, more than twice as many students listed "going deeply into debt" (32.4%) and "being unemployed" (31.2%) as their biggest fear than those who indicated a terrorist attack (13.4%). Experts believe that, because these students were already aware of possible dangers and exposed to heightened security in schools after the 1999 Columbine High School shootings, the events of September 11, 2001 may not have been as startling to them. Even though the majority of students who participated in the survey feel it is likely that the U.S. will experience another terrorist attack within five years, economic fears are having a greater impact on graduating college seniors.
