According to the Center for Campus Fire Safety, "there's a huge demographic in the middle [between children and the elderly] that hears nothing about fire safety". In an effort to fill that gap, the Center works with college campus fire chiefs to promote program and materials which can be shared with students on campus. The materials carry messages about the need for vigilance and the "common threads" that run through most student-related fire incidents. The Center is also beginning to take on the role of "watchdog" by surveying colleges on their fire safety policies, and including the resulting ratings on the company's guidebooks.
