An Associated Press article dated March 23, 2005 reports younger children now often have their own cell phones. Preteens, as young as age 8, are given cell phones so that their parents can easily contact them. Some companies are even marketing phones specifically designed for preteens, allowing parents to control what numbers can be dialed and omitting extra functions such as games and text-messaging. While schools historically have discouraged the use of cell phones by students, many are now allowing them as long as they do not become disruptive or distracting.
