Serving Students with Limited English Proficiency

A March 16, 2005 press release from the U.S. Department of Education (ED) outlines progress that has been made under No Child Left Behind with respect to serving students who have limited proficiency in English. All states have now implemented English language proficiency standards and annually assess English language learners. In addition, all states require those teaching students with limited English proficiency to meet language fluency standards. Nationwide, there are approximately 5.1 million students with limited English proficiency.
