2008 Summer Reading Initiative Makes Free Books Available for Low-Income Students

A May 6, 2008 press release from the U.S. Department of Education (ED) announces that free books will be made available across the country to schools, libraries and literacy organizations that serve low-income students. The 2008 Summer Reading Initiative is the latest stage of a multi-year Book Donation Campaign, which is a collaborative effort between ED, the nonprofit organization First Book, and several major U.S. book publishing companies. The children's books being distributed this summer will be provided by Random House.
