An April 4, 2008 article from the Chicago Sun-Times indicates that, based on results of the latest National Assessment of Education Progress (more commonly referred to as "the nation's report card"), the basic writing skills of eighth grade students in Illinois rank seventh nationally. In addition, students in the city of Chicago had the fourth-highest average scores among public school districts in 10 large cities. Scores are based on writing exams that were administered last spring.
