MPAA Revises Figures Regarding Illegal File Sharing by College Students

According to a January 23, 2008 article from Inside Higher Ed, the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) recently revised earlier statements regarding the number of college students involved in illegal peer-to-peer (P2P) file sharing. The industry is concerned that P2P file sharing prevents artists from being paid for their work. Due to human error during a 2005 study, the MPAA had initially reported that file sharing by college students accounted for 44% of overall lost revenues - the corrected figures, however, indicate a much lower figure of 15%. The MPAA and the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) have been advocating stronger measures by college administrators to monitor student file sharing on campuses across the country.
