A January 14, 2008 article from The Associated Press discusses how, across the country, an increasing number of physical education teachers are structuring their classes to meet the individual needs of students - particularly, those students whose weight may prevent them from fully participating in team sports. Rather than focusing on team events, where students with less athletic abilities may be left on the sidelines, physical education classes are incorporating activities that allow students to work at their own pace. The amount of effort put forth by students - often, measured in sweat - influences grades more than how well they master particular skills. The ultimate goal is to teach students to integrate regular physical activity into their daily lives. The article is available at the MSNBC Web site. |
