Community Colleges Developing Programs for Parents

A November 27, 2007 article from Inside Higher Ed reports that several community colleges are responding to the increased enrollment of traditional age students (i.e., between the ages of 18 and 24) by developing special programs for parents. Historically, the majority of community college students were in their late 20s or older, and typically did not rely heavily upon their parents for advice and support. Because more high school students are now choosing to attend two-year colleges immediately after graduation, community college administrators are seeing an increase in the level of participation from parents. Programs for parents can help families learn to make important transitions and foster a sense of independence in the student, which may be more of a challenge when the student continues to live at home.
