An October 17, 2007 article from The New York Times reports that the United States Public Interest Research Group has launched a campaign that encourages colleges to limit the number of credit card companies marketing to students on campus. In particular, "free giveaways" (T-shirts, etc.) in exchange for completing a credit card application are being targeted. Many parents are in favor of the campaign because, if they are 18 or older, college students are considered adults and can legally apply for as much credit as they choose - even though, if they get behind on their payments, it is often a parent who is called upon for financial assistance.
