Federal Lawmakers Consider Expanding Health Coverage for College Students
8/10/2007

According to an August 9, 2007 USA Today article, federal lawmakers are considering bipartisan legislation which would expand health coverage for college students with a physician-certified severe illness. Current federal law allows only full-time students (between the ages of 19 and 24) to remain on their parents' health insurance. If a student is unable to attend school on a full-time basis due to the treatment needed to battle a serious illness, they run the risk of not being covered by insurance. In order to protect these students (and their families) from incurring significant debt related to health care, the proposed legislation would allow qualified college students up to one year of medical leave without losing their insurance. One potential roadblock for the passing of this legislation is the question of how to fund the expanded coverage.
