According to an August 5, 2007 article from The Washington Post, an increasing number of high school graduates are choosing to defer their college admission for a year while they explore other opportunities and experiences. The practice has become common enough that it has resulted in the emergence of 'gap-year consultants,' who - for a fee - will help students decide how they want to spend their time. College admissions staff do not seem to be opposed to the new trend, because students who have taken a gap year tend to arrive on campus more mature. Many students use the time to volunteer or perform some other form of social work.
