A July 25, 2007 article from The Associated Press reports that, according to a recent poll, students in schools across the country are spending significantly more time studying reading and math each day. In many cases, this increase in reading and math has resulted in less time spent on other subjects and activities. Critics of the No Child Left Behind law point to its requirements regarding reading and math proficiency as the reason for less focus being placed on other topics. The poll was conducted by the Center on Education Policy (CEP), a nonpartisan national advocate for public education.
The article is available at the MSNBC Web site. A corresponding press release and the full report are available at the CEP Web site.
