Careers
One of the main reasons your student is probably going to college is to increase the chances for a successful career, even if it's not clear what that career might be. It is not necessary to make a final decision about a major field of study until junior year. Though, an early decision may be helpful, it will probably continue to change throughout the job search process. As a parent, encourage your student to consider different career opportunities. Help develop skills and encourage activities that utilize those talents. Use the Occupational Handbook and the Illinois Department of Employment Security (IDES) Web site for descriptions of different career options.
