ISAC Rules, Part 2759
The Nurse Educator Scholarship Program (NESP) was designed to attract capable and promising students to the nursing educator profession. The intent of the legislation that created this program was to increase the number of instructors to allow more students to be educated in the field of nursing and to provide an opportunity for individuals interested in making a career change to the nurse educator profession. 2009-10 was the last academic year in which funding for this program was to be appropriated by the Illinois General Assembly.
This program paid tuition and fees for approved graduate-level programs at eligible Illinois colleges for up to four calendar years (the equivalent of 8 semesters or 16 quarters of full-time enrollment). Recipients attending a public college received a scholarship to cover the cost of tuition and fees. Those attending a private college also received a scholarship to cover the cost of tuition and fees, up to the maximum amount payable to a recipient enrolled in the most expensive comparable program at an Illinois public college.
In addition, qualified applicants received a stipend of up to $10,000 to cover the cost of attendance, including living expenses. Stipends were prorated according to the credit hours taken for recipients who were not enrolled on a full-time basis.
As part of the application process, the applicant agreed to the terms and conditions outlined in the application's Teaching Agreement/Promissory Note. By receiving the scholarship, the applicant must teach in Illinois in the field of nursing education. If this teaching commitment is not fulfilled, the amount of benefits received (including scholarship and stipend dollars) converts to a loan, and the entire amount, plus interest, must be repaid. Scholarships funds were no longer awarded after the 2009-10 academic year but ISAC continues to monitor that NESP recipients meet the program requirements.
