Student Veterans FAAs and Certifying Officials Other Veteran Resources and Organizations
Student Veterans
The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs’ (VA) has developed a step-by-step process to help students compare the different federal veteran education benefits and determine which one best fits their situation. Step 4 of the process includes a Chapter 33 Benefit Estimator. Other general benefit information can be found on the VA’s Post-9/11 GI Bill Web page at www.gibill.va.gov/ and on the resource page for benefit recipients.
Another valuable resource on the Post-9/11 GI Bill is provided by the Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America (IAVA), a nonpartisan, nonprofit organization dedicated to veterans of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and their families. Visit the VA’s Post-9/11 GI Bill general information page or access the GI Bill calculator.
FAAs and Certifying Officials
The education benefits section of the VA’s Web site includes an information page for certifying officials and other education professionals. Tools and job aids such as VA Once training materials and online training for new certifying officials are available through this site.
Helpful information about payment processing and procedures can be found in a presentation given by the VA at the NASFAA 2009 National Conference. A copy of the presentation, which includes several screen prints of VA Once, can be found on NASFAA’s Web site in the Conference section.
The Student Veterans of America (SVA) is a coalition of student veterans groups from college campuses across the United States. The organization is dedicated to developing new student groups, coordinating between existing groups, and advocating on behalf of student veterans at the local, state, and national level. Student veterans groups provide peer-to-peer networks for veterans, coordinate campus activities and provide pre-professional networking. These groups are an important part of ensuring that every veteran is successful after their service.
The SVA Web site offers several resources for both students and schools including a guide book for establishing a student veteran center on campus, a handbook for starting a SVA chapter, and a guide to help veteran students transition from combat to campus life.
