What’s New for 2005-06?

  • Added shaded letters within all the date field boxes (MMDDYY) to clarify month, day, and year entries.
  • Instructions added for FAFSA front page, "Using Your Tax Return", to clarify the use of tax forms to students.
  • Added a sentence to the “Certification Statement” warning students not to disclose their Personal Identification Number (PIN) to anyone encouraging proper use of the Federal Student Aid (FSA) PIN.
  • Added guidance on reporting Social Security Benefits on Worksheet A.
  • Added “net worth” definition (current value minus debt) for Questions 44, 82 and 83.
  • Notes for questions 34 and 72 were revised to change the income level from $50,000 to $100,000 to qualify for filing the 1040A, 1040EZ, and TeleFile forms for 2004. This reflects changes made by the IRS, although the IRS income level is based on "taxable income". This change does not affect eligibility criteria for the Simplified Needs Test.
  • New Spanish language version of the Renewal FAFSA on the Web (FOTW) site.
  • New streamlined FOTW homepage.
  • FOTW provides more information about the PIN and students and parents can apply for a PIN from FOTW, without exiting application.
  • Parents with multiple children in college will be able to transfer their information within FOTW to other children’s applications.
  • Implementing “real-time” processing for Renewal FOTW applicants with good 2004-05 match results.
  • PIN applicants and holders will be required to select and answer a Challenge Question for enhanced security.
  • Only the last four digits of parent’s Social Security Number will display on paper and electronic Student Aid Reports (SARs).
  • When e-mails with links to SAR information on the Web are returned as undeliverable, a paper SAR or SAR Acknowledgement will be generated and mailed to the student.
  • Spanish e-mail notifications will be sent to students and parents who submitted Spanish-language applications and provided valid e-mail addresses.
  • Changes to the NSLDS History Information page of the SAR concerning aggregated loan information and estimating loan repayment
