A March 29, 2007 USA Today article discusses findings from a study that tracked 2,500 elementary school first-, third-, and fifth-grade classrooms. Funded by the National Institutes of Health, researchers observed students and teachers during their typical school days. Results of the study indicate that teachers place the most emphasis on reading and math. While critics contend that more time should be spent on other skills/topics (such as problem solving, science and social studies), others believe that teachers are doing what they must in order to meet the testing requirements set forth by the No Child Left Behind law.
