A March 14, 2007 article from USA Today reports that, across the nation, many colleges are re-evaluating the degree to which institutional funds should be used to award merit-based aid. While the value of good grades and high test scores has not diminished, future projections indicate an increase in the number of college students from low-income families. Consequently, some colleges may choose to designate more of their institutional dollars for need-based aid. Although the largest portion of all student aid continues to be need-based, merit aid has shown the biggest increases in recent years.
