Recording Industry Targets College Students Who Illegally Download Music Online
3/2/2007

A February 28, 2007 Reuters article reports that the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) is sending letters to colleges, informing them that some of their students have used the college's network to swap music for which they have not paid. The letters encourage college administrators to advise these students that they will be sued, unless they settle their cases before potential copyright infringement lawsuits are filed. A Web site has been established by the RIAA to allow students to settle their cases online. The recording industry is taking these steps in an effort to curb the illegal downloading of music, which the industry reports has cost them millions of dollars. One alternative the RIAA suggests for students is to purchase digital music from legal Web sites.

The article is available at the CNN.com Web site.
