According to a February 20, 2007 Reuters article, students who have anxiety over how they might perform on an upcoming math test may actually earn a lower score due to their worrying. The brain's working capacity, which is needed to perform difficult mathematical calculations, is negatively impacted by math anxiety. Test preparation classes, which can help to reduce student anxiety, may not be an option for all families due to the costs involved. Some researchers believe that, because anxiety can have such an impact, test scores should not be the only means of measuring what a student's future math abilities might be.
